Starting as a small child, I have had a fascination with American Indian
artwork, especially functional and ceremonial baskets, blankets and beadwork.
My interests then expanded into other cultures, spanning both the globe
and time periods. African and Middle Eastern tribal work, the arts of Asia
and India, Russian jewelry and Faberge, the Bau Haus, European and American
Art Deco, Art Nouveau and the Victorian Era have all been of profound influence.
After attending Parsons School of Design in New York, I spent several years
in the advertising business but the draw of my first love of weaving
and beadwork was too strong to ignore. I found traditional looms to be too rigid
and prohibitive to express my interests, so after much trial and error,
I developed my own off-loom weaving process based on Russian beadwork and
European lace making (tatting). Unlike the traditional methods of weaving
and tatting, which require only one needle, I have found that a minimum
of two, and up to six, needles are necessary to achieve the lace-like patterns
I create. Each piece is woven together, one bead at a time, utilizing beads
from around the world. New and vintage glass and crystal, bone, clay, sterling
silver, freshwater pearl and semiprecious stone all become my pallet. I
feel the result is a modern day homage to a bygone era and many different
cultures.
Although I travel primarily on the East Coast of the United States, I have
developed a client base from California to Canada and Europe. I am honored
to be included in such fine shows as The Wells Street Art Festival in Chicago,
Illinois, Festival in the Park in Charlotte, North Carolina, The Boardwalk
Art Show in Virginia Beach, Virginia and The Art Deco Weekend on South Beach
in Miami Beach, Florida.
Picture That Designs has been creating copyrighted and "one of a kind"
creations for over five years. We have been very successful participating
in fine art and fine craft shows throughout the United States. We make every
piece in the USA, in our studios -- not handmade by someone else outside the
United States. We take great pride in our workmanship, which is why we are
so confident that you will be completely satisfied.
